The Freedom To Drive
Electric Vehicles and Scotland’s LEZ
A Low Emission Zone (LEZ) was introduced to Dundee in May 2022 in a bid to reduce pollution and harmful emissions in the city centre. Whilst there was a grace period of two years, fines have been enforced since 30th May 2024.
Vehicles that don’t meet the emissions regulations will be restricted from the city centre. This generally includes diesel engine vehicles registered before 2015 and petrol vehicles registered before 2006, though there are exceptions.
If a non-compliant vehicle is caught driving through the zone via ANPR, the driver will receive a penalty charge notice (PCN). The penalty doubles for each subsequent visit to the same LEZ in a non-compliant vehicle, though there is a cap.
Similar restrictions apply in Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh, with LEZ operating in these areas.
Electric vehicles comply with the requirements and therefore are exempt from any penalty. If you drive through or work in Dundee city centre, it may be worth considering switching to an electric vehicle.
