Electric Car Charging Cost Calculator

How Much Will It Cost To Charge My Electric Car?

Use our calculator to get an estimated price on how much it would cost to charge your electric car.

The calculator requires the follow details:

  • Charging Rate – the charging power of your EV charger. Most home car chargers in the UK have the charging power output of up to 7.4kW whereas a three-phrase commercial charger can charge up to 22kW. However, it’s possible your car may charge at a lower rate than the power output of the charger, which will restrict the charger’s rate, so enter whichever value is lower.
  • Current Charge – the car’s current state of charge, e.g. 25%
  • Desired Charge – what percentage of battery you’d like to charge up to, e.g. a full battery would be 100%
  • Battery Size – Your vehicle’s battery capacity, e.g. an Audi Q6 e-tron has a 100kWh battery
  • The electricity cost per kWh – this can usually be found on your energy supplier’s website for your applicable tariff, e.g. 28.42 p/kWh

Example:

An Audi Q6 e-tron, fitted with a 100kWh battery, that currently has 20% battery charge remaining and is being tethered to a domestic 7.4kW home charger with the aim to fully charge the battery to 100%, during the night to take advantage of the off peak tariff of 8.5p/kWh, would cost approximately 92p to charge.

Is There A Cheaper Way To Charge My Car?

If you’re looking to reduce the cost of charging your electric car, then there’s a few things you can consider.

Fit A Home EV Charger At Your Property

If you’ve bought an electric vehicle but you’re using the charging cable fitted to a household socket, it can take over 15 hours to charge your car due to the socket’s maximum 3kWh output. This makes it impossible to charge the vehicle from empty during off-peak tariff hours through the night.

By having a home EV charger installed at your property instead, you can benefit from the charger’s higher power output of 7kWh which means your car will be charged quicker in a fraction of the time, allowing you to completely charge your vehicle within the off-peak tariff window, saving you money.

solar panels

Use Solar Energy To Power Your Charger

Many of the EV chargers on the market are solar compatible, so if you have solar photovoltaic panels installed at your property, you can use the energy generated from the sun to help power your EV charger in combination with electricity from the National Grid, thereby lowering the cost of your energy bills.

If enough energy is generated using solar power, you could charge your vehicle for free!

Not only is this a great way of reducing the cost of charging your car, but you can also use solar power to generate electricity for the rest of your home. Great if you’re looking for a renewable energy source that is kinder on the environment.

OVO Charge Anytime

Switch To A Cheaper Energy Tariff

Some energy companies have special tariffs if you have an EV charger, which reduces the cost of charging your vehicle.

OVO Energy, for instance, which is compatible with the Hypervolt Home 3 Pro, has a Charge Anytime plan, which means day or night, you can charge your compatible vehicle for just 7p per kWh any time you smart charge.

Other energy companies also have cheap tariffs that you could benefit from, whilst your current energy supplier may offer a cheaper tariff for existing customers.
